Biography

Thomas W. Phelan, PhD is a clinical psychologist, author, filmmaker, and educator best known for creating the internationally recognized parenting classic 1-2-3 Magic, which has sold over 2.5 million copies. His newest book, Stop That Chewing: Misophonia: When Ordinary Sounds Trigger Extraordinary Distress, marks a significant departure from his decades of work on child discipline and family dynamics.

Dr. Phelan brings a uniquely qualified perspective to the subject, as he writes not only as a clinical psychologist, but as someone who has been personally diagnosed with—and treated for—misophonia. That combination of clinical training and lived experience allows him to speak with both authority and empathy to readers who have struggled to find clear, practical information about the condition.

As with 1-2-3 Magic, his approach emphasizes accessibility, realism, and useful strategies that ordinary people can apply in their daily lives – helping sufferers, their families, and the professionals who treat them better understand a condition that has too often been overlooked.

Whether through his books, films, or clinical work, Dr. Phelan has spent his career helping families enjoy one another more—an ethos that extends into his own life through a love of the outdoors, music, gardening, and an ever-growing list of creative pursuits.
